JOCK RULE JOCK HARD #2 By Sara Ney Release Day: DEC 6th Kip Carmichael is no pretty boy. He's a rough. Dirty. Giant. Hair so unruly, and a beard so thick, his friends on the team call him Sasquatch. The first time Sasquatch lays eyes on Theodora "Teddy" Johnson across the keg at a party one night on Jock Row, she'd been relegated to the sidelines by her jock hungry "friends." Week-after-week, he watches beautiful but bashful Teddy getting overshadowed, and overlooked. Sasquatch finally broad shoulders his way through the crowd, offering to to be her hairy godmother. But the minute their eyes meet? He's a goner. Teaching her the RULES for winning a jock will be the easy part. Not falling in love with her is going to be a losing game. Review:
I really enjoyed all of Sara Ney's books, be it the How To Date A Douchebag series, or the previous book of Jock Hard series, Jock Row. I especially enjoyed Jock Row, so I was really excited to see the next characters she would introduce into this series. I feel like Sara Ney can write the best male POV's I've ever read. There's something so cavalier and naturally douchey about her dude's, and alot of the times it has be going like OMG my male significant other also talks like this. And I really enjoy her females as well. They all hold their own.
I guess I set the bar too high for this book, and like always when I set the bar too high, the book falls short.
Kip Carmichael comes from an extremely rich family. Very early on in his college years he decides to grow a beard and his hair (worst disguise ever) in an effort to put off girls. This is so he won't get taken advantage of by slutty girls. Kip doesn't date, and doesn't have time for shallow college chicks. This is something he reiterates many times in the beginning.
On the other hand we have nerdy Theodora. She's shy, a bit of a wallflower, but not a pushover. When Kip sees her at one of their parties at the Jock Row, he sees her get shoved aside by her friends. He sees her unable to hold conversations with the guys. And so Kip decides to help her out, first by doling out advice and then by acting as her hairy godmother. And so begins Theodora's journey into becoming what Kip thinks is a confident woman.
Now, lets get to what drove me nuts.
I enjoyed the story. I really did. But some parts just did not work for me.
Kip was a bit too douchey, and too in his head. He was all "I am so beautiful underneath this beard, she has no idea, blah blah blah". He was wayyy too judgemental of Theodora. First he wrote her off as wussy and was like you'll never get what you want in life, and then when she was finally good enough, he wants her all for himself. Oh, hell no. It always felt like he put himself before her, throughout the story. And all the times Theodora kept on telling him that she didn't really want to talk to the jocks, and he was all "no no you really do". Grrr.
And Theodora. First of all. Why do these girls keep on going to parties they don't want to go to? She clearly doesn't want to attend them, and her friend doesn't want her to be there either. So why the hell does she have to attend? And then when she goes all she does is mentally complain. Stay home, girl.
I found that she let Kip run all over her at times. She should have stood up for herself more, and let her feelings be known. She was more two dimensional, and I really didn't connect with her.
Honestly I didn't connect with both the lead characters. And even towards the end Kip was second guessing Theodora's intentions and why she was with him.
All in all, the book was an okay read. Some parts (the judgey, douchey, mansplainey parts) made me really mad. I felt like all the girls, other than the main one, were portrayed as conniving bitches, who wanted to land a jock and live happily ever after. It felt kind of disappointing to read. This book sounded like it would be a perfect read, but everything put together, there were some things I just did not agree with.
Maybe I am outgrowing this genre.
3.5 stars.
